Biography
ARTIST: AGENT DOUBLE E - Renée Asteria
BIOGRAPHY in English (Español en seguida, Français plus bas)
Renée Asteria is a musical globalist and social justice activist. Her music is multilingual and multicultural, blending folk-rock, reggae, latin, and more. According to Dan-O (Danogo.com) her "sunny live sound is similar to Kate Bush, Lene Lovich, Portishead & Sade, peppered with tropical sounding Latin and reggae beats". The New Jersey-born, France-dwelling artist of Bolivian-Dutch descent draws her inspiration from lessons learned during her worldwide travels. She has collaborated with musicians all over the world, from Argentina to NY, Europe and Africa.
In 2007 Renée Asteria, a.k.a. Agent Double E, completed her second album entitled "Faces of Agent Double E" with producer Matias Martyn (Tibetan Monkey) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The album was released live on Rock & Pop FM, Argentina's most popular radio station and was followed by a 6-month tour of the USA where Renée Asteria performed with local bands in New York City, Connecticut, California and Louisiana. She is currently promoting the project in Europe and preparing a tour of 2008 summer festivals. Her first European performance took place at the Case A Chocs in Neuchatel, Switzerland, as part of "Togetherness Day", a world peace and solidarity music event organized by Darius, a Reggae artist from Rwanda.
Described as "musically adventurous, lyrically innovative and .... a one of the kind breaking of all the rules to the utter delight of the listener" (C. Foster of The Beat, Reggae Update, KPFA Reggae Central, Los Angeles), Renée's tunes have been getting the attention of music lovers worldwide. Using the internet as her primary tool for distribution, her tunes "Mosquito", "Vinchuca" and "Oblivion" have consistently topped the charts on several sites including SongVault.com, Ourstage.com, Radioindy.com, Broadjam.com and more. The album has been added to broadband independent radio stations in the US and Europe.
Aside from her innovative tunes and surreal voice, Renée is earning international praise for her passionate live shows. Renée gives us her soul. Backed by a full band she expresses herself fully through her voice and Bob Marleyesque-dance steps. In solo, Renée is bound to her guitar, her voice and percussive naked-hand playing creates a full band sound in our imagination.
Renée Asteria's goal in music is to perform and produce while at the same time disseminating messages of social justice and promoting actions of practical solidarity. In addition to being an international musician Renee had a background in public health. Having graduated with a Masters in Public Health from University of California, Berkeley (2006), her work experience in South and Central America have graced her with a strong commitment to doing something for the common good.
Renée is currently working on her third album. If you are interested in participating as a musician or producer please send an email to renee (a) asteriarecords (dot) com for links to premixes.
The Musicians
The original formation of AGENT DOUBLE E represents an amalgam of talented musicians from Buenos Aires and California. Matias Martyn has produced multiple local bands and is making himself a name, locally compared to Lee "Scratch" Perry for his skills in sound engineering and dub remixes (Tibetan Monkey, http://myspace.com/tibetanmonkey). German Alvarez (keys) and Gustavo Estevez (bass) both play in a well recognized reggae band called Sinsemilla. Pedro Olecese (bass) and Frederico Solé (guitar) have home studios and are producing original music. Manuel Lugea (drums), Alejo Hernandez (trumpet), Pedro Detone (guitar) and Pedro Irusta (contrabass/bass) form a local funk-rock band Tony Fluye (http://myspace.com/tonyfluye). Jesse Engel (guitar) is based in California and play in many groups including Jennifer Johns Bay-area band. The beautiful arrangements heard on the disc are a collective creation.
In California, AGENT DOUBLE E is a seven-piece band composed of Ben Malament and Jason Levis (drums), Rob Ewing (bass), Jesse Engel (guitar), Luke Thomas (guitar), Naomi Siegel (trombone) and Brighton Godfrey (trumpet). Jason Levis is currently producing Joseph's Bones Debut Album, a double-album of original reggae-dub tunes and remix versions (jasonlevismusic.com).
In NY, Renée is collaborating with Judah Tride/Riddim Nation, NY-based reggae bands made up of Lawrence Qualls (drums), Julien Paul (bass), Josh David (guitar), Eric Toussaint (keys), Roger Lent, OJ (trumpet), Corey King (trombone), Nadav Nirenberg (trombone) and Erica (harmonies). Agent Double E, Koleurz (Nigerian NYorker, African and R&B artist), Riddim Nation and Strawberry Brown (Latin Pop & Reggae, Danbury, Connecticut) collectively produce events in NY and Connecticut. Josh David, leader of Judah Tribe is currently producing an excellent roots reggae album, release TBA.
Other Productions
Renée has produced tracks with the Andean folk-rock band Quinoa Groove who are currently working on their second production (release TBA). She has also performed with several bands as lead and background vocalist (Taj Weekes and Adowa, Spiritual Reggae Band, SoloSol, Weadem, Pacific Vibrations & others).
Renée recently recorded background vocals for Taj Weekes & Adowa's (Roots Reggae from St Lucia/NYC) new release - DEIDEM.
